The video itself featured text that read, “When you just turned 25 and have a 14-year-old bonus son.”
TikTok, which has been viewed 16.5 million times, was inundated with thousands of comments, many didn’t understand what a “bonus” son meant, or overlooked it altogether, thinking that Kourtney was the boy’s biological mother.
“How old were you when you had a 14-year-old child?” one user asked.
“Wait, you got pregnant at 11?” said the other.
In response to the confusion, the 25-year-old made another TikTok in response, directly answering a question omitted from the original video.
“I don’t understand what you mean by premium son. Could you explain it? I’m new to your videos and love them by the way. I’m sorry if this upset you,” the question says.
Courtney replied that she was not offended and liked being asked questions.
“Being a premium mother is well deserved, a stepmom is just the one that married dad,” she said.
Of the 11,000 comments Kourtney received on the video, many praised her for using the term bonus mom instead of stepmom.
“I refer to my daughter’s father’s wife as her bonus mom (sic). My 15 year old daughter is my bonus daughter. The step is so fast. And these are bonuses in our lives, ”wrote one of the users.
“Bonus son/mom (sic) is a nicer term than saying ‘stepson’ or ‘stepmother’. Usually when you say the word stepson or stepson, it’s offensive,” wrote another.
