A recent Bud Light commercial featuring Miles Teller and Keli Sperry prompted people to talk about an old TikTok trend called “Hold Music” that is picking up again.
TikTok is the center of ever-changing trends, and even years after a particular issue has come and gone, it remains in the minds of users.
One such trend quickly took off during the pandemic as people turned to virtual communication and methods for just about everything, leading to long waiting periods during customer service calls.
In no time, the song that played in the background during the long wait became a trendsetter as many users joined the challenge and made videos of them dancing to it.
Revisiting the TikTok “Hold Music” trend
Back in 2020, suspensions by customer service representatives weren’t all that bad, thanks to TikTok users who made a funny trend out of it.
Sometime in late October and early November, two years ago, a TikTok user going by the pseudonym @critterbiscuit shared a video of him performing to background music while they were on standby for nearly 43 minutes. Daily dot.
TikTok went viral instantly, inspiring others to show their own feelings about their calls being on hold for long periods of time by taking part in a fun challenge.
“Hold Music” has become a trend in its own right, and more than two years later, people think the same thing was included in the latest Bud Light commercial in which the couple enjoy Hold music.
Twitter users think Bud Light ad looks like a viral challenge
The popularity of the Hold Music trend is such that people quickly noticed the similarities between the TikTok challenge and the new commercial.
When Keli looks frustrated and exhausted about being held up for almost an hour, Miles takes it upon himself to entertain her by dancing to the hold-down music. After a while, the duo dance together to the music and pause each time a voice is heard from the other end before the music resumes, as does their dance.
A number of Twitter users are of the opinion that the video is too similar to a viral trend.
“Promotional video where they danced to LMFAO hold music. I first saw it on TikTok.” Twitter one.
Another added: “Haha, I thought it was funny. This hold music has been a TikTok trend for a while.”
One user commented on the ad on YouTube: “I love the ad! What makes it more interesting is the fact that I danced to it when it was trending on TikTok.”
The song used in the viral trend
The instrumental used in hold music is officially called Opus No. 1, according to the Daily Dot.
It is said to have been recorded by Tim Carlton in 1989 at the age of 16. This music was later used by one of his friends, Darrick Deal, when he joined Cisco in the 1990s for a phone design job.
Apparently, Darrick asked Tim if he would use his track as his hold music, and the rest is history.
