According to The Times, TikTok has “rekindled the passion for romance novels.” According to industry data, the genre’s sales grew by 110% in three years to around £53 million. Publishers attribute the rise to the #romancebooks hashtag on TikTok, which has racked up billions of views on the platform, making it the biggest subgenre in the BookTok community. The romance “used to be tucked away, almost shamefaced,” HarperFiction’s Maddy Marshall said, but now there are desktop displays that say “BookTok recommends” and “BookTok made me buy this.”
