‘Sandwich dressing’: The styling hack that’ll elevate your outfits
Have you ever scrolled through your social media wondering how girl influencers look like this together?
Well, we’re going to let you in on a little secret, and it’s about sandwiches.
No, not the BLT type.
Sandwich clothing is a hack that will make you look chic and doesn’t require expensive designer items or a stylist.
The sandwich rule, first popularized by Instagram fashion guru Lydia Tomlinson, is all about color and balance.
Think of a sandwich—bread on top, filling in the middle, and bread on the bottom—delicious and, most importantly, symmetrical.
Well, that rule applies to your outfit as well, but take away the bread and add some color and accessories instead.
Still confused?
Farrah-May Archer Boady, Stitch Fix Styling Lead, explains: “Start by choosing a color that will be the base (bread) that will essentially unify the whole look (sandwich) when you incorporate it into the top and bottom halves. your outfit.
“Next, choose the opposite color for the” middle “(filling) – whether it be trousers, a skirt, a shirt or a cardigan.”
So, for example, you can choose a top and shoes in one color, and pants in another color.
“The result creates an impressive twist on a monochrome look, and there are many ways to achieve this, depending on the overall look you want to achieve, as well as your own unique taste and style,” Farra-May says.
And according to Megan Watkins, SilkFred’s head stylist, it’s no wonder the hack has become popular.
“It’s such a popular formula because it’s easy to apply and always looks good,” she explains.
“An outfit in one color — say, gray — can look sloppy and unkempt, whereas if you just swap out the gray knit for a white sweater and wear white sneakers, your outfit is organically balanced and very stylish.”
So, how do we make a sandwich dress for SS23?
“Try this season’s color obsession, pansy purple, the perfect hue to embrace as we head into the warmer months,” says Farrah-May.
“Simply pair your purple blazer, Mary Jane trousers and palazzo trousers with a rich emerald green silk blouse and you have a gorgeous sandwich ensemble.
“My favorite brands of monochrome brights are French Connection and Vero Moda.
“But if bright, bold hues aren’t your thing, opt for chic earthy tones from brands like Selected Femme and AllSaints for a more understated look.
“For example, cream trousers, boots, and a cardigan casually draped over the shoulders would pair perfectly with a classic, light, button-down white shirt—it’s just a slightly more subtle take on the sandwich.”
And if you don’t know where to start your sandwich journey, accessories will help you dip into the water…or a sandwich.
You can also create this look by choosing accessories,” Meghan explains.
“For example, a black hat with black boots, or a gray blazer with gray socks.”
We can’t tell if we’re hungry or in need of some kind of retail therapy.
